In October 1529, in Sancti Spiritus, Sebastian Cabot, busy with building some brigs, licensed 15 of his men to go inland to discover the "Sierra de la Plata". Upon returning, the expedition members led by Captain Francisco César report they had seen "so much wealth, that it seemed wonder". This vague story is the origin of the myth of the enchanted City of the Caesars that was eagerly searched for from the Empire of Peru down to the Strait of Magellan.
